More Swings At The Plate
People earlier in their career are often enthusiastic about getting more opportunities and developing.
They want a development plan that is precise and procedural — where if you do a, b, and c you get a promotion. Very often the only thing they need is more time (i.e. more swings at the plate). One of the most valuable skills you develop over time is pattern-matching. Having seen a situation or problem multiple times means you form instincts on how to navigate it.
This is an unsatisfying answer to a highly ambitious person, since they believe they can control their career and outcomes with specific goals and tools.
Instincts are hard-won through time, through making mistakes, and through seeing and working with a wide spectrum of people and products. There is no shortcut.
